Fumigation
Whole-structure tent fumigation.
Whole-structure fumigation is the most invasive treatment in residential pest control, and the most expensive. The building is sealed under tarpaulin and filled with a fumigant gas that penetrates every void, gallery and cavity β reaching infestations that no localised treatment can. It is used primarily for widespread drywood termites, and occasionally for severe beetle or bed bug infestations.
It is also the treatment with the most preparation. Occupants and pets must vacate for two to three days, food and medication must be removed or sealed in supplied bags, and plants close to the structure need protection. Fumigation kills what is present but leaves no residual protection, so it is normally paired with preventive treatment afterwards.

What To Expect From Serious Fumigation?
Real properties need more than a surface treatment.
Protection works from the perimeter inward β and from the hidden structural spaces outward.
Structured Inspection
Every credible job starts with an assessment of the building, not a price over the phone. In Humid Southeast conditions that means checking crawl-space foundations and heavy tree cover before anything is applied.
Targeted Application
Product goes where pests actually live, travel and enter β wall voids, cavities and harbourage points. Broad over-spraying looks thorough and achieves very little.
Layered Defence
Interior treatment, structural sealing and an exterior perimeter band working together. Any one of the three alone leaves an obvious gap.
Seasonal Adjustment
Pressure here peaks March through October, so the programme should shift through the year rather than repeating the same visit. Activity builds early in spring and holds through a long season, easing only briefly in winter.
Local Knowledge
Regional experience matters: subterranean termites, fire ants, mosquitoes behave differently in the Humid Southeast than elsewhere.
Household-Safe Protocols
Treatment planned around children, pets and daily routines β with clear guidance on products used, where they're applied, and how long to stay clear.
Signs You Have A Problem
What to look for before calling β knowing the signs helps you describe the problem accurately and get a more useful quote.
- β Drywood termite activity across multiple areas rather than one localised gallery
- β Frass accumulating in several separate locations
- β Previous localised treatments that have failed to resolve activity
- β An inspection report recommending whole-structure treatment
Why It Matters
Fumigation runs $2,500 to $8,000 depending on structure size. It is normally the correct choice only when localised treatment has failed or infestation is genuinely widespread β a second opinion is reasonable before committing.
What Professional Fumigation Involves
Use this as a checklist when comparing quotes β two quotes at the same price frequently cover very different work.
- 1Full inspection confirming that whole-structure treatment is actually warranted
- 2Detailed preparation instructions covering food, medication, plants and access
- 3Sealing the structure and introducing fumigant at a calculated concentration
- 4A controlled exposure period, then aeration and clearance testing before re-entry
- 5Certification confirming the property is safe to reoccupy
- 6Follow-up preventive treatment, since fumigation leaves no residual barrier
Preventing It Coming Back
Treatment clears what is there now; these are what stop it returning.
- βAnnual inspection, which usually catches drywood activity before it becomes widespread
- βSeal and paint exposed timber to reduce accessible entry points
- βScreen attic and foundation vents against swarming adults
- βDeal with localised activity promptly rather than waiting
This guidance is general information about fumigation, not a diagnosis or a quote. Pestlio is a directory and does not perform treatments β always have a licensed professional inspect your property before deciding on a course of action.
